The 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid vs. 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid are two of the most popular sedans on the road today. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, but which is right for you?
Sonata vs. Accord: Midsize Masters
It’s been a best-seller for decades among the great midsize sedans. With the same engine choice as before and Honda's top build quality, the Honda Accord remains a carryover model.
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is currently a strong contender in the midsize sedan segment in its seventh generation. The Sonata isn’t a thrill ride, with competent but not overly exciting driving characteristics.
Driving the 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid
Front Wheel drivetrains are offered on the 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and the 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid. The Accord Hybrid uses a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder hybrid engine that produces 20 more horsepower (212 vs. 192) than the Sonata Hybrid. Accordingly, the 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid is a little faster than the 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.Â
A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard on the Accord Hybrid, and there are no "steps" between gears. The engine can be kept at its most efficient speed for fuel economy or its highest horsepower for maximum acceleration. Sonata Hybrid doesn’t come with a CVT transmission but instead comes with a DCT (Dual-clutch transmission) automatic transmission.Â
Comfort, Interior, and Cargo
The 2022 Accord has a spacious five-passenger cabin with ample legroom for rear passengers. The Accord maintains a futuristic yet understated appearance despite its conservative looks.Â
Accords come standard with cloth upholstery, but you can upgrade to leather seats and an eight-speaker audio system. A Honda Sensing suite of driver and safety functions is standard on all trim levels, as is an 8.0-inch touchscreen information display.
There’s a lot of interior space inside the Sonata, and it's considered a large car rather than a midsize. Besides the middle seat, there’s good space for four, and the trunk holds 16 cubic feet. The interior is modern and comfortable. The cloth seats on the base model are replaced by leather for the upper trims.Â
Standard Features
The base Honda Accord has cloth upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, two USB ports, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay integration, Bluetooth, and a four-speaker that comes with a 160-watt audio system. Among the advanced safety features are forward-collision warning with adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams.
The Sonata's base trim comes with cloth upholstery, A/C, split-folding rear seats, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a USB port, and a USB port eight-speaker audio system. Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control are among the standard safety features.
Both the Sonata Hybrid and the Accord Hybrid score high on safety, reliability, and performance for 2022. However, we should keep in mind that the Honda Accord sold over two times as many units as the Hyundai Sonata during the 2021 model year.
